Every year about this time, Danos likes to remind us all about the importance of hydration as temperatures and outdoor activities start to increase. So, to get our 2023 Hydration Campaign kicked off please, take the time to “refresh” yourself on why we need to stay hydrated.

Water is essential for life. It makes up 60% of our body weight and is responsible for transporting nutrients, regulating body temperature and flushing out waste. But despite its importance, many of us don't drink enough water, leading to dehydration.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. It can happen for many reasons, including sweating, urination and breathing. Symptoms of dehydration include thirst, dry mouth, headache, fatigue and dizziness. Severe dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death.

Why is hydration important?

Staying hydrated is essential for many reasons. For one, it helps regulate body temperature. When we're dehydrated, our bodies can't cool down as efficiently, which can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Drinking enough water also helps flush out waste and toxins from the body, which can improve digestion and prevent constipation.

Water also helps transport nutrients throughout the body. When we're dehydrated, our blood becomes thicker, making it harder for nutrients to circulate. This can lead to decreased energy levels, difficulty concentrating and a weakened immune system.

Finally, staying hydrated is important for maintaining healthy skin. When we're dehydrated, our skin becomes dry and wrinkled. Drinking enough water can help keep skin hydrated and prevent premature aging.

How much water should you drink?

The amount of water you need to drink each day depends on a variety of factors, including your age, weight, activity level and climate. As a general rule, adults should aim to drink at least eight cups (64 ounces) of water per day. However, if you're exercising or spending time in a hot, humid, environment, you'll need to drink more to stay hydrated.

One way to gauge whether you're drinking enough water is to check the color of your urine. If it's light yellow or clear, you're probably well hydrated. If it's dark yellow or amber, you may need to drink more water.

How to stay hydrated

Drinking enough water throughout the day can be challenging, but there are several tips and tricks you can use to stay hydrated:

  1. Carry a water bottle with you at all times. This will serve as a visual reminder to drink water throughout the day.
  2. Set reminders on your phone or computer to drink water every hour or so.
  3. Drink water before, during and after exercise.
  4. Eat foods with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber and celery.
  5. Avoid sugary drinks, which can dehydrate you.
  6. Drink water instead of other beverages at mealtime.
  7. Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up in the morning.
  8. Flavor your water with fresh fruit, herbs or cucumber slices to make it more appealing.

Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining good health. It helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, flush out toxins and keep skin healthy. By drinking enough water each day, you can ensure that you stay hydrated and feel your best.
