The Dwain "Hog" Carrell Field Employee of the Year Award

It’s not every day you get the opportunity to meet someone who is genuinely kind and compassionate in all aspects of their life, especially when it comes to work; however, that’s just the type of person Dwain “Hog” Carrell was. He began his journey with Danos in 1993 as an offshore superintendent in Larose, Louisiana.

A native of Arkansas and known for his blonde hair and blue eyes, Dwain could be described as a resourceful, respectful handyman. There was nothing he couldn’t fix and no stranger he wouldn’t say hello to. Customers loved him. They would request him for projects, knowing he’d get the job done and done right. Employees loved him. He quickly developed relationships with his co-workers, gaining the nickname “Hog” for the way he’d devour his food at lunchtime. A Danos employee of 15 years, Dwain became known as the draftsman, universal ISO drawer, project superintendent, mentor and friend, and he was recognized in 2001 as the Employee of the Year. Dwain was an all-around great person who was undoubtedly a tremendous asset to Danos.

“Hog represented everything you wanted an employee to be. He was committed to the company, produced high quality work with great integrity and was a genuinely good person,” said John
Bigler, integrated services technical advisor. “He’d always say, ‘Hey boss man, want me to put on my Batman suit and get it taken care of?’” John laughed as he reflected on the good times shared with Dwain.

In addition to being a great employee, Dwain was an exceptional mentor to his peers. He worked closely with several employees, showing them the ropes and guiding them to professional development. His influence helped pave the way for over 15 employees to step into leadership roles.

“Hog stayed on his employees and pushed them to be great. He knew that most of us needed a kick in the rear, and he was prepared to give it. We all appreciated it,” stated Eric Hood, operations manager.

In 2008, Dwain was fatally struck by a car while trying to remove unclaimed materials in the middle of the road. He passed away doing what he loved— helping others. 11 years later, employees still have photographs of Dwain on display, speaking volumes to the impact he had not only on the company, but the employees he worked with.

Dwain left behind a legacy of high performance and exceptional leadership, a legacy that will continue to live on through recipients of this award named in his honor.
