Greg Short - Staff Employee of the Year

In 2000, Gregory “Greg” Short took a summer job as a roustabout with a paint crew before going to college. He enjoyed the work, and the foreman liked him. So the company offered him a permanent position as an operator. Greg left his college plans behind and became an operator in three months. Thus began Greg’s career in the energy industry.

Greg spent the early part of his career working offshore. In three years, he became lead operator running a LOOP offshore facility. At 21 years old, he managed two helicopters, three crews and lots of boats. After serving as production superintendent for Freeport McMorran, he moved to the role of account manager for PSN, which later became Wood, where he oversaw all LOOP offshore field operations. He was later promoted to contract operations as a project manager for Apache.

In 2013, Greg joined Shamrock Energy Solutions as director of operations, where he was based out of the Lafayette office. There, he helped start the company’s business in west and south Texas. After Danos acquired Shamrock in 2019, he became the Eagle Ford area manager. With Danos, he solidified the crews working in South Texas, overseeing day to day operations in the area.

Greg says the transition from Shamrock to Danos was, “amazing for me.”

“From day one, the culture, strategy…everything about it was something I always wanted. The values were big, and I fit right in,” he says. “There’s not a decision I make without the Danos purpose and values at the forefront.”

In 2022, Greg helped start Danos’ business in the Rocky Mountains and was instrumental in the Denbury transition.

In August 2023, Danos named Greg the 2022 Staff Employee of the Year and also promoted him to operations manager of shale production. Greg helps manage and maintain fleet operations from start to finish. He oversees shale facilities including shops, offices, recruiting/HR, customer relations, strategy and day to day operations.

The geographical spread of the shale operations presents a challenge given such a large working radius. Most employees in these areas are many miles away from their managers. However, Greg knows he has a good team to work together.

In particular, the South Texas crew is like family to him.

“I’ve worked with most of the team there for a long time,” says Greg. “We trust each other and understand the business. It’s a good working family. With Danos’ values in place, it’s easier to spread that foundation to other places.”

With managing a widespread area, his travel is different week to week. He tries to visit each location once a Quarter and emphasizes frequent communication with his teams to stay on track.

While Greg frequently travels during the week, on the weekends he makes it home to Eagan, La., to be with his wife Ryan and their five children—three girls and two boys ranging in age from five to 15.

He is active with their children’s activities, like sports and travel ball. The family enjoys spending time at their camp in Toledo Bend, and Greg fishes and hunts when he is able.

Additionally, the Shorts are partners in a small cattle farm and residential and commercial real estate. The Shorts also have a family-owned rental property business that his wife Ryan has run for 7 years.

Greg appreciates the opportunities he has had from working with Danos.

“It has been a blessing to see the things I’ve seen and meet new people and customers. I love a good challenge, and there are a lot of challenges. Every day, I wake up and make sure I’m trying to do something good for Danos.”
