Danos Partners on Artificial Reef Construction at South Timbalier 86
Danos is proud to collaborate with the Coastal Conservation Association’s (CCA) REEF Louisiana Program, Chevron, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and Reefmaker-Walter Marine to complete the South Timbalier Block 86 Reef project. This new reef, located in the Gulf of Mexico, is the 54th artificial reef built by CCA Louisiana and is a significant step toward restoring vital fisheries habitat.
The South Timbalier 86 Reef features 36 "Super Reefs," including 12 massive 15-foot pyramids weighing over 30,000 pounds each, and 24 smaller 8-foot pyramids weighing 6,000 pounds each. These structures are made of concrete, steel rebar and limestone rocks, mimicking natural reefs to support diverse marine life and create sustainable fisheries habitats.
Danos’ Coastal Restoration Operations Manager Nick LeBlanc emphasized the company’s role in enhancing Louisiana’s marine resources. “Danos is proud to partner with CCA Louisiana, Chevron, LDWF and Reefmaker to bring this reef to life. Together, we’re creating a lasting habitat that supports healthy snapper fisheries for families to enjoy for generations.”
This project marks the second installation of "Super Reefs" by the CCA REEF Louisiana Program, following a similar effort at South Timbalier Block 63 earlier this year. LDWF Reef Coordinator Mike McDonough highlighted the significance of this initiative, noting that South Timbalier 86’s accessibility and robust design will provide key habitat for red snapper and other important species.
With funding from CCA’s REEF Louisiana Program and LDWF’s Artificial Reef Trust Fund, the project exemplifies the power of collaboration among private partners, government agencies and non-profit organizations.
CCA Louisiana has several reef projects scheduled for 2025, continuing its mission to replace critical fisheries habitats lost due to natural and manmade causes. Danos is honored to contribute to this important work, supporting the resilience of Louisiana’s marine ecosystem and the communities that rely on it.
